The Price Initiative:
Strings for Little Havana and Homestead
A Mission of Harmony and Opportunity
Named in honor of Florence Price, the pioneering composer who broke barriers in classical music, this project provides tuition-free, high-quality violin instruction to youth in Miami's most vibrant communities. We are not just teaching music; we are building discipline, fostering community, and creating a new generation of leaders.
Florence Price (1887-1953) was the first African American woman to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra. Her story of perseverance and artistic excellence against all odds is the guiding inspiration for this project. By naming the initiative after her, we honor her legacy and commit to breaking down modern-day barriers to classical music.

What is The Price Initiative?
Named in honor of Florence Price, the groundbreaking African American composer, The Price Initiative is a 6-month, tuition-free program serving 20 students (ages 5-18) from two of Miami-Dade's most culturally rich yet underserved communities: the vibrant urban neighborhood of Little Havana and the growing rural community of Homestead.
The project goes beyond teaching violin. It cultivates essential life skills, including discipline, critical thinking, self-esteem, and collaborative teamwork. Through a hybrid model of local weekly lessons and combined weekend ensemble rehearsals, we build bridges between urban and rural youth who might otherwise never interact.
